About the programme
The programme uses a culturally responsive, community-led and intergenerational approach to support South Asian, Chinese and Korean communities in New Zealand. It aims to build mental health literacy, reduce stigma, and strengthen the skills people need to support themselves and others. The name Reach In, Reach Out encourages people to reach in by noticing their feelings and emotions, and reach out to friends, family, trusted networks, or professional services such as Asian Family Services for support.
The programme aims to:
- Increase access to culturally relevant mental health resources for Asian communities.
- Reduce stigma around suicide through national awareness campaigns.
- Build intergenerational mental health capability so young people, parents, whānau, and trusted community members feel more confident having supportive conversations about wellbeing, distress, and help-seeking.
- Upskill professionals and community-facing workers so they can better understand and respond to the needs of Asian clients, families, and communities.
